A kapal van der wijck, a Dutch cargo ship that sank in 1643 off the coast of Japan, is the subject of an upcoming Indonesian film. The sinking of this ship became one of the first recorded maritime disasters and has led to much artistic conjecture and controversy ever since. This article reviews 'tenggelamnya kapal van der wijck bluray 720p', an upcoming Indonesian film based on this event. The main plot of the film is the same as that of a painting by Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom. The film also used some important parts of the book written by Isa Jatmiko. The film tells about an incident occurred on June 3, 1643, when a Dutch ship named "van der wijck" sank on its way from Jakarta to Nagasaki in Japan, during the period of Dutch colonial expansion in Indonesia and Asia. According to some sources, it can be concluded that: there were more than 550 people on board and most likely only one person survived - Jan Pelgrom de Bye (the painter who later narrated his experience in Vroom's painting). The rest were killed by Japanese soldiers. The survivor was left alone in the ocean without any help or vessel. The Japanese soldiers stole the valuables of the victims, including clothes, food, weapons etc. The painting of van der wijck shipwreck by Hendrik C. Vroom depicts the survivors holding palm leaves to signal for help. The survivor was later rescued by a Japanese vessel "Senyo-maru" and taken to Nagasaki for trial for allegedly planning a mutiny. He was sentenced to death, but later pardoned because he told about alleged bad treatment on board the van der wijck to Japanese authorities. He lived in Japan until 1660 when he decided to return to Batavia (Jakarta). The survivor, who was the only one left to testify, eventually becomes a good painter and illustrator. Jan Pelgrom de Bye was a first class passenger on the ship, which should have been a sign of his high status. However, because of his bad treatment at the hands of other passengers and crew members, he became as one of the survivors due to his sheer luck as he was thrown into water after being beaten by other Dutchmen. In contrast with that painting that depicts all survivors holding palms leaves for help, there is another account written by Isa Jatmiko in 1750 which mentioned that those who survived were actually stranded on a deserted island without food or water. On this island, they survived eating seagulls and drinking rainwater. Later on, two Japanese fishing boats happened to pass by and there were around forty survivors left. The fishermen gave them some rice and clothes and took them to Yamada (a port city in Japan). The remainder of the people died at sea because their clothes were soaked with sea water and it was cold that night.
